Journey with Steam Inc on this return trip to the Woodville Mad Hatter's Market Day!

Sunday 1st November 2026

Step aboard Steam Incorporated's famous red train for a memorable family day out as we steam into the heart of the Manawatū for Woodville's much-loved Mad Hatter's Market Day.

Travel behind both a heritage coal-fired steam locomotive and a diesel electric locomotive aboard our beautifully restored heritage steel carriages, complete with an open-air viewing platform that's perfect for taking in the scenery along the way. Join the train from Paekākāriki, Paraparaumu, Waikanae, Ōtaki, Levin or Palmerston North and enjoy a relaxed journey through the countryside before arriving in Woodville. From the station, you can either take a leisurely stroll into the town centre or hop aboard the complimentary shuttle bus.

Woodville Mad Hatter's Day

Since 2017, the Woodville community has transformed the town into a wonderfully whimsical celebration inspired by the world of the Mad Hatter. With a touch of steampunk flair, the event features over 70 market stalls, live entertainment, delicious food vendors, family activities and the famous Crazy Hat Competition.

Children will love the themed tea party, old-fashioned games and interactive entertainment, while adults can browse the markets, enjoy local hospitality and soak up the festive atmosphere. Better yet, passengers from our train have even taken home first place in the Crazy Hat Competition before—so don't be afraid to get creative!

Throughout the day, spot prizes will be awarded for the best costumes and hats, with plenty of vouchers and giveaways adding to the fun.

Feeling hungry? Choose from a fantastic range of food trucks or support one of Woodville's welcoming cafés. On board the train, tea, coffee, light refreshments and a selection of beverages will also be available for purchase, making the journey just as enjoyable as the destination.

Jump back onboard our train in the afternoon for a lovely run home in the afternoon sun, returning you home in time for tea.
