The Full Whanganui Steam Experience - 6th June 2026

Saturday 6th June 2026

Travel to the beautiful riverside city of Whanganui behind one of our magnificent coal-fired steam locomotives. Once there, you can explore Whanganui at your leisure, or choose to enjoy a relaxing cruise along the Whanganui River aboard the historic coal-fired paddle steamer PS Waimarie.

Departing the Kāpiti Coast while much of the country is still asleep, our journey quickly leaves the coast behind and winds through the rural landscapes of the Horowhenua. After a stop in Palmerston North, we head north along the Main Trunk through Feilding and Marton, before turning onto the Marton–New Plymouth Line for the final stretch into Whanganui. Crossing the mighty Whanganui River, we then roll slowly down the short 5km branch line to Taupō Quay, right in the heart of the city’s riverfront.

From here, the day is yours to enjoy.

Choose one of the following options to maximise your experience:

Option 1 - Sail On The Queen Of The River - Waimarie

Your Last Chance to Sail on the PS Waimarie before her Dry Docking!

Salvaged from the depths of the Whanganui River after lying there for nearly 50 years, the historic Paddle Steamer Waimarie was meticulously restored and triumphantly relaunched in 2000. Today, she stands proudly as New Zealand’s only operational coal-fired paddle steamer, offering a rare and authentic glimpse into the golden age of river travel.

Departing from the Riverboat Centre Wharf, your cruise journeys upstream along Te Awa Tupua – the Whanganui River, revealing spectacular views of Whanganui best experienced from the water. Informative onboard commentary highlights the rich riverboat heritage and key landmarks along the way. Guests can also view the working boiler that powers the paddle steamer, and may even have the opportunity to meet the homing pigeons and send a message back to the Riverboat Centre in true riverboat tradition.

This relaxed riverside gathering is a chance to celebrate one of Whanganui’s most treasured heritage vessels, with live music, great local food, heritage tram rides, tastings from regional producers, and a vibrant atmosphere at the Riverboat Centre.

If this isn't your cup of tea, browse local shops, enjoy a coffee by the water, or simply relax and take in the scenic river views. You may wish to visit the historic Durie Hill Elevator—New Zealand’s only public transport elevator—or take a leisurely stroll into the nearby town centre to discover more of Whanganui’s charm.
