The Stratford Express
Saturday 22nd February 2025
Embark on an afternoon adventure with Steam Incorporated in New Plymouth, as we head to Stratford! Relax onboard heritage carriages as we escape the surrounds of central New Plymouth, and head east towards Lepperton. As we say goodbye to the Tasman Sea for the afternoon, the railway line secretly snakes its way through many cuttings and under varying roadways as we pass by the suburbs of East End, and Fitzroy.
As we round a sweeping curve into Lepperton, we meet up with the Waitara branch line, and what is now home to the Waitara Rail Preservation Society’s private railway. Heading south, we pass through the township of Inglewood, with roots tracing back as far as 1873 and a current population of nearly 4,000.
From here, the railway line follows State Highway 3 down all the way to Stratford. Lying beneath the eastern slopes of Mt Taranaki, Stratford once served as a busy railway junction serving as a one of the ends of the now mothballed Stratford to Okahakura Railway Line. You can see remnants of this route if you look to the south of the railway station, curving off to the left. Here, you will have approximately 40 minutes to have a quick wander or get up close and personal with our heritage diesel electric locomotives hauling the train. Train depart's New Plymouth Wind Wand at 2:30pm, returning at 5:15pm.
